Kentucky was mainly rural, but two vital metropolitan areas emerged ahead of the American Civil War: Lexington (the initial city settled) and Louisville, which turned the most important. Lexington was the center with the Bluegrass area, an agricultural area manufacturing tobacco and hemp. It was also known for the breeding and coaching of high-qual
